Eyra is a small, growing company based in Ostrobothnia, Finland, nestled in the heart of the Kvarken Archipelago.
At our core, we have Stefan Backas, a dedicated sound designer; Andreas Westerberg, a talented developer; and André Norrgård, an expert coder. Together, we’ve crafted an innovative sound player that creates dynamic soundscapes using natural sounds of the Finnish wilderness and samples of real acoustic instruments. These soundscapes are adaptive and ever-changing, ensuring that no two moments ever sound the same.
At Eyra, we value nature, authenticity, and genuine human connection. Every soundscape is carefully crafted by hand, offering a truly unique and immersive auditory experience.
Background
The Eyra project originated from a series of sound installations created by Stefan Backas between 2017 and 2022. During the work on these sound installations, the idea for a customized sound player was born. In 2023, a collaboration began with Andreas Westerberg and André Norrgård to realize this idea.
Over the past year, we have developed the first version of the player, which has been tested in the secondary schools in Närpes and Petalax, where it has played nature sounds in selected spaces. In the summer of 2024, the player has also been used in a project at the Stundars museum outside of Vaasa, where it is used to play ambient sounds in some of the museum cottages.
